Casper is an upcoming dark fantasy supernatural television series developed for Disney+, and based on Famous Studios' character Casper the Friendly Ghost. It is a co-production between Disney Branded Television and Universal Content Productions.
Overview
The new series is said to be "a modern update on the classic ghost story" and will have "a dark edge to it the way Wednesday tackles The Addams Family lore."
Production
A live-action Casper series was initially developed for Universal's streaming app Peacock. Despite hiring Kai Yu Wu to serve as showrunner,[1] the show did not move forward. In 2026, it was announced that Disney had won a bidding war to co-produce with Universal Content Productions, a new Casper series for Disney+. Despite a similar set up, this version is said to have no affiliation with the previous attempt. It was further announced that Steven Spielberg, Rob Letterman, and Hilary Winston would serve as executive producers with Letterman also being eyed to direct.[2]
Trivia
- This is not the first television series that Disney and Universal have worked on together. Via Touchstone Television, they also co-produced the USA Network television series Monk.
- This is not the first time DreamWorks Animation Television had developed something with Disney as a distributor. Through Hulu, DreamWorks Animation released Madagascar: A Little Wild, The Mighty Ones, Trolls: TrollsTopia, The Croods: Family Tree, DreamWorks Dragons: The Nine Realms, Abominable and the Invisible City, and Fright Krewe.
