The Happy Helpers coach a baseball team.
Synopsis
The Happy Helpers get a call from Mr. Thunderboom. He is hoarse and has laryngitis. He’s supposed to coach his son Elray’s baseball team, the Chili Dogs, but his hoarseness just won’t work, and tomorrow is the annual Little Sliders Baseball Classic against Pete’s team, the Red Hots, who have never lost the Classic. Mr. Thunderboom was the best hitter and catcher in the league when he was a kid. So, the Happy Helpers decide to coach the Chili Dogs.
Chili Dogs Susie, Buddy, Pearl, Puck, and Elray are here for their practice. Mr. Thunderboom gives Elray his mitt, and Mrs. Thunderboom takes her husband to the doctor. The Happy Helpers review the basics and do a demonstration: One team gets three turns to hit the ball, and the other gets three turns to catch the ball. After three outs, they switch which team is hitting and catching. If you hit the ball, run around the bases. If the ball is caught by someone, you’re out. If the ball flies over the fence, it’s a home run. You have to stay inside the lines and run to each base. If you’re touching the base, you’re safe. If you’re not, you can be tagged out with the ball. Minnie slides to home plate before Daisy even tags her, and she is safe.
First, the team practices hitting. Buddy fails to hit his ball and digs himself into a pit. Susie makes her ball orbit around the Earth. Elray successfully hits his ball, but he also causes his bat to fly into a tree, causing a ton of balls and bats to fall out. Next, the team practices catching. Everyone tries to catch it together, but they crash into each other, with Elray admitting it’s impossible. Finally, the team practices base running. Once Minnie hits the ball, everyone runs at the same time.
The team thinks they’re the worst team in town. Suddenly, Daisy passes them ice-cold bottled water, and Elray catches them with his trunk, showing he has a lot of skill using it. Just then, Pete, the Red Hots’ coach comes by to speak about the battle, and to make it interesting, the losing team’s coach has to dress up in a hot dog mascot costume and serve red hots to the winning team, with Daisy thinking the losing team’s coach will serve chili dogs instead. Daisy accepts the battle, and the game is broadcasted by Billy Beagle.
The Happy Helpers encourage the team to have fun, and Mayor McBeagle, the umpire, starts the game. After a few moments, the score is the Red Hots’ 2 to the Chili Dogs’ 1, and then a male voice sings a song about practicing and having fun. After the song, the score is now the Red Hots’ 7 to the Chili Dogs’ 5. Suddenly, Elray is up to bat, worried that his team will lose. After two tries, he successfully hits the ball with his trunk. Two Chili Dogs pass by home plate, and the game is now tied 7-7. Elray slides to home plate without getting tagged, and the Chili Dogs win the game 8-7. Mr. Thunderboom declares that Elray is the official owner of his mitt, and Pete serves Minnie, Daisy, and the Chili Dogs red hots. Elray, seeing how sad the Red Hots are for losing the game, invite them to eat red hots with them, and Pete takes the last one, much to a fly’s annoyance, as the episode ends.
