Theseus is a character from the Hercules episode "Hercules and the Grim Avenger". He was voiced by Eric Stoltz.
Role
Theseus served as a Prince of Attica, who secretly came to Prometheus Academy as an exchange student on a quest to defeat the Minotaur who escaped to Athens. After the Minotaur escapes from the Labyrinth, he helps Hercules face it. Theseus has a double identity, his second self being the superhero "Grim Avenger", whose costume resembles that of DC Comics' character Doctor Fate, though his personality and back story are more inspired by Batman. As the Grim Avenger, Theseus is constantly narrating his every move aloud and later develops a short lived attraction and relationship with Cassandra. He was once one of Phil's former students as well as mentioned in the movie.
Trivia
- In the original myths, Theseus was the son of Poseidon and Aethra, wife of Aegeus King of Attica. So being Poseidon's son, he was Hercules' cousin.
- The film places Hercules and Theseus in a "successor" dynamic: Theseus is the failed former student, and Hercules is the new prodigy. But in the Myths, they were friends and contemporaries. Theseus admired Hercules and sought to imitate him. Hercules even saved Theseus from the underworld (where he was stuck on the Chair of Oblivion).
- In mythology, Theseus never had a mentor. He was raised by his mother and discovered his strength autonomously by lifting a rock to retrieve the sandals and sword of Aegeus.
- It is unknown if Theseus was later killed by the Minotaur.
