Martin, although a loving husband and father, can be rather scatterbrained. He is more susceptible to being swayed by Kiff's plans; for instance, in "Thirst to Be the First", Beryl has to place the reminder "Kiff is tricking you" on the Chatterleys' refrigerator to prevent Martin from falling for Kiff's ploys to go to school while apparently sick. He has a poor memory, as established in "Be Still My Harp". His forgetfulness is later seen in "Weekly Grocery Shop", where he forgets the family's grocery shopping list and struggles to remember what items to buy.
Nonetheless, Martin has also been shown to be rigid when it comes to rules. Whenever the Chatterleys go on road trips ("Road Trip"), Martin strictly enforces road trip rules for safety and cleanliness reasons, which are restrictive to the point that Kiff dreads road trips because of Martin's rules.
Martin also has a large appetite. He is fond of Pulp OJ orange juice and becomes annoyed when the Chatterleys run out of it at home, as shown in "Leave a Little Juice". In "Chatterley vs. Chatterley", Beryl suspects Martin of eating her leftover pizza slice, and he is threatened with a lifetime pizza and popcorn ban until Kiff admits to eating the slice. In "Hungee Squirrel", he is incredibly disappointed when the Chatterleys lose the chance to enjoy free meals for life at the Hungee Squirrel.
Appearance
Martin is a squirrel with brown fur, a cream underbelly, a bushy tail lined with a stripe in a darker shade of brown, large circular eyes with small pupils, and a small brown nose, as well as a dark brown mustache and a five o'clock shadow.
Relationships
Kiff Chatterley
Martin loves Kiff and has at times found himself a willing participant in his daughter's antics. In "Leave a Little Juice", Martin joins Kiff in trying not to tell Barry to stop finishing the Chatterleys' orange juice. In "Soup Opera", he and Kiff bond over their love of the soap opera Smoldering Cove and later attempt to rescue Miss Deer Teacher when it seems that a plot from the show is playing out in real life.
In "No Dad Ideas", Martin takes Kiff along to a product pitch when he feels that she is unaware of what he does as an inventor. When the pitch fails and Martin is left dejected, Kiff orchestrates a staged meeting between Martin and a major investor (in actuality Terri Buns) to boost Martin's confidence. In "Chatterley Vs. Chatterley", Kiff acts as Martin's lawyer in a session of Chatterley "family court".
Of Kiff's parents, Martin tends to be more lax in dealing with Kiff. In "You Can't Handle The Tooth", Martin is more willing to let her skip brushing her teeth and even points out that Beryl had forgone brushing the previous night, though he does not protest when Beryl makes Kiff brush anyway.
Beryl Chatterley
Martin is a devoted husband to Beryl. He tries his best not to disappoint her; in "Weekly Grocery Shop", for instance, he goes to great lengths to complete the Chatterleys' grocery shopping without letting Beryl discover that he forgot their shopping list at home.
The Pone
Martin hates his next-door neighbor the Pone, though the animosity is one-sided and the Pone clearly sees Martin as a friend. Martin has offered no explanation as to why he hates the Pone beyond saying "I don't like that guy."
Pat Chatterley
When Martin's brother Pat comes over for dinner in "Fun Uncle Pat", Martin resents Pat's presence. Upon learning of Pat's homelessness, Martin tries to claim that there is no room left in the house for Pat, then becomes annoyed at Kiff when she lets Pat stay in her room. The next morning, Pat tries to be helpful by refilling Martin's coffee mug during breakfast, but Martin snaps at him, leaving him hurt. Martin eventually admits that while he loves Pat, he finds Pat's cheerful habits, including his constant storytelling and his tendency to ask if anyone needs anything, annoying. By the end of the episode, Martin comes around to Pat after Pat takes him on a free cruise.
