Wizards are supernatural characters that appear in Wizards of Waverly Place and its spin-off series Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. Wizards posses great magical powers that can be used to alter reality to unknown levels.
However, Wizards have to fight for these powers in a battle known as Wizard Competition. The series' main characters are Wizards.
History
In the series, the history of Wizardry goes back to the mythic Atlantis, which is mentioned only once in the series. Wizards lived amongst the common folk until they were driven out and forced into hiding in a parallel dimension known as Wizard World.
The most noteworthy part of wizarding culture is the Wizard Competition, a centuries old battle in which only the victor (usually referred as "The Best") can keept his/hers powers of wizarding magic. Wizards have contact with many mystical beings such as Cucuy (Latin mythical monsters), Angels (splintered into the Guardian Angels and the Angels of Darkness), dragons, ghosts and much more.
Trivia
- Wizards seem to have the power of longivity as characters like Professor Crumbs has lived for over 800 years.
- During Jerry Russo's time as a wizard, wizards were not allowed to marry mortals so they had to give up their magic if they loved a mortal, like Jerry did to marry Theresa Russo, although they were able to pass on their powers if they became a full wizard. Jerry gave Kelbo is powers once he won the family wizard competition to marry Theresa.
- However, this rule seems to no longer exist by the time of the following generation, as Justin became a full wizard after becoming the headmaster at WizTech and still kept his powers after marrying a mortal named Giada Russo.
- As established in "Wiz-Taken Identity", it is illegal for a wizard to give a mortal their powers temporarily and the wizard can be sent to Wizcatraz as a result.
- Several things in the wizard world parallel the Harry Potter franchise. The most noticeable similarities are as followes:
- Professor Crumbs is based on Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts.

- The glasses Justin and Alex wear in "Wizard School" are based on the ones worn by the titular character.
- Professor Crumbs is based on Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts.
