"The Perfect Weekend" is the first segment of the third episode of The Weekenders. It premiered on March 11, 2000 alongside "Throwing Carver".
Synopsis
Tino plans out the perfect weekend but his friends bail out.
Plot
Friday
Tino announces that he has put together the perfect weekend which involves heading to the museum to get baklava, earning tickets at Funville to get one of the new scooball prizes, and shopping at the Everything Fits store for their new sale. He runs the plan by his friends who all agree. When Lor ask that they stop by her house first for a snack, she is distracted by the arrival of her grandmother and stays. Later, Carver is told by his parents that he has been slated to volunteer for Helpers Helping the Helpless and is dragged away by head volunteer Gloria Duwong, while Tish sees an ad for a contest involving a Dulcimer and signs up right away.
Saturday
Tino tells his mother that despite the fact that his friends are busy, he plans to go and recruit them for his perfect weekend anyway, though she tells him that that sounds pointless. He stops by Lor's house, but finds that she is in the middle of Granny McQuarrie's lesson on how to fix a riding mower. When she offers that he ride it too, Tino is disinterested. He then goes to Carver to "rescue" him from Helpers Helping the Helpless, but he is shown to be enjoying hanging out with the volunteers and receiving their adoration, refusing to leave. Tino finally goes by Tish's house, but sees her practicing her Dulcimer and doesn't bother speaking to her.
Back at home, Tino is saddened by the fact that his friends are busy until his mother tells him that "a kite flies on a string, not a stick". While flummoxed by the saying, she explains that it simply means that he needs to learn to be flexible. He decides to fulfill the weekend list by himself, though his mother makes it clear that that is not what she meant. Tino's "perfect weekend" ends up being a bust. All the baklava failed to meet demand, leaving none for him, he collects the new scooball prize, which is an unusual green cat figurine, and the sale at Everything Fits is whittled down to a small pile of mismatched socks.
Sunday
Tino has given up and resigned himself to a boring weekend, even though his mother tells him that he shouldn't be easily defeated by things not going his way. He gets word of the dulcimer contest and decides to attend it with Lor and Carver invited. Tish successfully wins the contest and Tino realizes that he had fun watching her. With things now having reached a positive outcome, Tino decides to continue the weekend hanging out with his friends at the ever changing pizza place. Tino admits that his weekend ended up going well after all, adding that he'll "keep [his] kite off a stick for a while," confusing his friends.
