"Science Rocks" is the second segment of the sixty-first episode of Vampirina. It is the second half of the eleventh episode of the third season. It premiered on October 19, 2020 alongside "Fang Ten!".
Synopsis
Mr. Gore tasks the class with creating a rock-themed project.
Plot
Mr. Gore tells the class that the special guest this Friday will be Dr. Jem Geodopolis, an expert of rock and gem stone, and president of the Pennsylvania Geological Society. The class will do a contest this week, and their assignment is to come up with a rock-themed science project. The best project will be awarded first prize, and the winner will present the project to Dr. Geodopolis herself. Poppy assumes Vampirina will win the prize, as she is great at science. Vampirina has a lot of ideas for her project.
She returns to the Scare B&B to find out that Aunt Olga and Nosferatu are visiting. Demi is told by Vampirina what the science project is about, and she decides to use chemistry to make a super-special rock candy. Oxana likes it, and Demi decides to assist Vampirina in the lab while Gregoria helps look after Nosferatu. Vampirina reads the ingredients needed for Transylvanian Rock candy and the instructions. She decides to add a dash of rainbow essence for the rock candy to form in an hour. Vampirina does experimenting, as it is an important part of the scientific process. Vampirina tries frog's breath and snapdragon oil before deciding to add every edible ingredient to the solution until she gets the right mixture.
So far, the ingredients don't work, and Gregoria brings Nosferatu to Vampirina before telling her that science is about testing to see what works and what doesn't. Nosferatu then messes with the ingredients, and while the others chase her, a drop of stardust spills on the mixture. Vampirina then heads to sleep before more drops spill on the mixture. The next day, Demi and Gregoria show Vampirina that the rock candy is formed, and she knows that Transylvanian tap water did the trick.
At school, Poppy and Bridget like the candy, with Bridget wishing her pet rock, Ms. Cuddle Cakes II, was that good. As for Poppy, she researched all the geodes in the backyard and catalogued them, while Edgar is a rock star. Mr. Gore praises the geodes and the rock candy. Vampirina then serves everyone the rock candy before returning home, where she states that Mr. Gore selected her project as the winner to present to Dr. Geodopolis. Vampirina then waits, but the rock candy is not colored with rainbows, so she starts from the beginning and retraces her steps, while thinking like a scientist does.
Vampirina sees the stardust spilled in the mixture, which she didn't notice before, and knows what caused the candy to glow. That means Nosferatu discovered the special rock candy ingredient, and Vampirina wonders what she'll tell Mr. Gore and his class. At school, Vampirina is excited for the big day, and is given a first prize ribbon for her picture with Dr. Geodopolis. She then arrives, and Mr. Gore tells her what a great job Vampirina did. Vampirina tells the class the truth, as the discovery was an accident. So, she retraced her steps, and realized Nosferatu spilled stardust into the mixtures. Vampirina apologizes and returns the ribbon to Mr. Gore. He states that some of the greatest discoveries in science history were accidents, like microwave ovens. Dr. Geodopolis praises Vampirina for not giving up and retracing her steps until she figured out how to repeat her results. That's what real scientists do all the time, and learn by making mistakes. All that matters is that Vampirina handled it, and she's a true, young scientist, like all the greats. Mr. Gore returns the ribbon to her, and she and Dr. Geodopolis have their picture taken.
